What does it mean to be a ‘Solemniser of Marriages’?

As a FuturFaith Minister, becoming a solemniser of marriages involves additional steps and responsibilities in line with the legal requirements of Ireland. While FuturFaith training equips ministers with the skills to conduct various ceremonies, including legally binding weddings, here's what it means specifically in the context of being a legal solemniser:

  • Legal Authority to Solemnise Marriages: FuturFaith Ministers who become registered solemnisers have the legal authority to conduct marriage ceremonies that are recognised by the state. This is a significant responsibility and role, as it involves officiating over a legally binding commitment.

  • Registration and Compliance: To solemnise marriages legally, a FuturFaith Minister must be registered on the Register of Solemnisers, maintained by the General Register Office in Ireland and/or Northern Ireland. This involves meeting specific criteria and ensuring compliance with the Marriage Act of the two countries.

  • Conducting Legally Binding Ceremonies: As a registered solemniser, a FuturFaith Minister can officiate weddings that are not ceremonial but also legally binding. This includes ensuring all legal requirements for marriage in Ireland are met, such as the Marriage Registration Form (MRF) is present for the ceremony. The legal declaration of marriage, legal wedding vows during the ceremony and the legal signing is carried out during the ceremony.

  • Representing FuturFaith's Inclusive Values: In conducting weddings, FuturFaith solemnisers bring the organisation’s mission of inclusivity and respect for all beliefs and traditions (or none). We can create ceremonies that are tailored to the diverse needs and beliefs of the clients we serve.

  • Cultural and Religious Sensitivity: A key part of being a FuturFaith solemniser is the ability to conduct ceremonies that respect and incorporate a variety of cultural, religious, and secular elements (or none), in line with our organisation’s inclusive approach.

For FuturFaith Ministers, becoming a registered solemniser adds a legal dimension to their role, allowing them to offer a comprehensive service that includes both the ceremonial and legal aspects of marriage.
